Miyan Bade AI and VFX in movies: “A giant we’ll have to fight,” says Chote Miyan director Ali Abbas Zafar.

Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff feature in the film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. The filmmaker, who has previously handled successful movies like Sultan (2016) and Ek Tha Tiger (2017) starring Salman Khan, explains why he uses little to no visual effects in his films.

The director states that the action movie is intended for “community viewing,” and the massive screen production was filmed on location during a period when the biggest movies of 2023–2024—Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan and Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter—were all recorded in private studios using green screens and closed doors to produce amazing visual effects. But Ali places a strong focus on utilizing VFX merely as a “support tool” and shooting in “real locations.”

Ali Abbas Zafar’s action film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Tiger Shroff and Akshay Kumar, is being marketed as a big-budget cinematic production. It is said that the movie’s budget has surpassed Rs 350 crore, and the producers are already anticipating significant box office success.

Ali adds that he is amenable to the notion of employing visual effects in movies, but only if his subject requests them. “If I have a plot planned for visual effects tomorrow, I might finish it as a VFX-driven story. In the future, you would combine virtual and real-world effects to create a world akin to Barbie’s or La La Land’s, or a fantastical setting like The Lord of the Rings. All those movies are fantasy, though. Action drama comedy Bade Miyan Chote Miyan needs to give the audience the impression that an actor has a burn on their skin and that it is hot in the theater. Real fire must be used to achieve this; VFX fire cannot replicate the same sensation. The implication is that everything is dependent on the type of movie. Instead than using VFX as the main means of presenting stories, I myself want to use it as a supporting tool,” he says.

Ali is returning to the big screen after a five-year hiatus. In 2019, he made his final appearance on stage in Bharat, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. When asked if he feels the strain of the box office, he responds that it’s hard to tell whether or not people will go to the movies after the outbreak. “It should be viewed in the community; it is not intended for over-the-top viewing. However, Bloody Daddy was a very private movie, and we concluded that even though Shahid Kapoor starred in it, it ought to be available on over-the-top streaming services. Miyan Bade You can watch Chote Miyan with your kids or your elderly parents; it’s a pure family entertainment with no profanity. “It’s an action movie that’s perfect for the whole family,” Ali says in closing.

“My jitters are that people have become very moody post-pandemic,” he says. Sometimes they show up three times as many as you anticipated, and other times they show up at all. All I ask is that they come and have fun. Since the main purpose of our content is to entertain the audience, we are really confident in it. Indeed, you will find a lovely heart in the movie, and I think it’s a big-screen extravaganza that will captivate viewers.
